Excerpt Reveal Tour: True North

Abandoned by her family in Plague-ridden Dominion City, eighteen-year-old Lucy Fox has no choice but to rely upon the kindness of the True Borns, a renegade group of genetically enhanced humans, to save her twin sister, Margot. But Nolan Storm, their mysterious leader, has his own agenda. When Storm backtracks on his promise to rescue Margot, Lucy takes her fate into her own hands and sets off for Russia with her True Born bodyguard and maybe-something-more, the lethal yet beautiful Jared Price. In Russia, there’s been whispered rumors of Plague Cure.

While Lucy fights her magnetic attraction to Jared, anxious that his loyalty to Storm will hurt her chances of finding her sister, they quickly discover that not all is as it appears…and discovering the secrets contained in the Fox sisters’ blood before they wind up dead is just the beginning.??

As they say in Dominion, sometimes it’s not you…it’s your DNA.

I’m very excited to share an excerpt to L.E. Sterling’s upcoming novel, True North, out April 4th:

“Let me finish. I have a job to do. I’m obliged to do the best job I can. Not just because I work for Storm but because that’s who I am. That job is to protect you, Lu.”

I turn my head, unable to bear even another second. I’ve had my fill of Jared’s merc routine. Gentle fingers coax me back again until I’m just inches from Jared’s glittering eyes. They look feral in the moonlight.

“But Lu.” He breathes my name like it’s a full sentence. “It’s a good thing that’s my job, because… Don’t you know I can’t even help myself?” He’s so close it’s as though the boundaries of our flesh have disappeared. And within one breath and the next, his lips are on mine. Soft, warm, molding me to his mouth. Then, hungrier, he pulls me closer, seeking more.

I’m dizzy with the taste of him on my lips, in my mouth. When my strength gives out, I slump onto his chest and he holds me tighter. I can barely react to the blazing warmth of his body full down the length of me, the scratchy feeling of his shirt decal under my fingers. There’s a fire in me, too, and with his sudden nip to my lip, it ignites. I’m feverish for him. Jared’s chest is molten rock under my hands. I’m struck with a desire to run kisses up his neck, to just behind his earlobe, just to hear the quick suck of his breath. I grab his hair and pull him tighter still. My lips sting from trying to get closer, closer, and rubbing too hard up against his teeth. Jared tries to hold them back but I can feel his incisors sharpen, his growl deepen, his eyes flip to a luminescent green in the darkness of the garden as he drinks me in.

And just as suddenly as it started, he takes me by the shoulders and pulls me away. I sway on the patio bench like a rag doll, cold and dazed. The garden hums with some secret life, bugs and frogs, but it’s just Jared and me here.

Touching a finger to my swollen lips, I watch him. He pants as though he’s kicked the living tar out of someone, a glassy expression to his feline eyes. He doesn’t take his hands off me, but he isn’t going to bring me close again, either. And that’s what makes me explode.

“What kind of game are you playing with me, anyhow?” I scream at him, thankful that the garden is empty for my tirade.

What do you think? Add it on Goodreads or order it on Amazon today!

L.E. Sterling had an early obsession with sci-fi, fantasy and romance to which she remained faithful even through an M.A. in Creative Writing and a PhD in English Literature – where she completed a thesis on magical representation. She is the author of two previous novels, the cult hit Y/A novel The Originals (under pen name L.E. Vollick), dubbed “the Catcher in the Rye of a new generation” by one reviewer, and the urban fantasy Pluto’s Gate.

Originally hailing from Parry Sound, Ontario, L.E. spent most of her summers roaming across Canada in a van with her father, a hippie musician, her brothers and an occasional stray mutt – inspiring her writing career. She currently lives in Toronto, Ontario.

Guardian of Secrets Blog Tour Review

I am really excited to take part of the Guardian of Secrets blog tour, hosted by Chapter by Chapter Blog Tours! Thank you to the hosts and thank you Entangled Teen for making me aware of this tour and for sending me a finished copy of this book.

thief-of-lies-1

Goodreads¦ My Review (3 stars)

Gia Kearns would rather fight with boys than kiss them. That is, until Arik, a leather clad hottie in the Boston Athenaeum, suddenly disappears. While examining the book of world libraries he abandoned, Gia unwittingly speaks the key that sucks her and her friends into a photograph and transports them into a Paris library, where Arik and his Sentinels—magical knights charged with protecting humans from the creatures traveling across the gateway books—rescue them from a demonic hound.

Jumping into some of the world’s most beautiful libraries would be a dream come true for Gia, if she weren’t busy resisting her heart or dodging an exiled wizard seeking revenge on both the Mystik and human worlds. Add a French flirt obsessed with Arik and a fling with a young wizard, and Gia must choose between her heart and her head, between Arik’s world and her own, before both are destroyed.

Guardian of Secrets (Library Jumpers #2)

by Brenda Drake

Publication Date: February 7, 2017

Publisher:  Entangled Teen

Being a Sentinel isn’t all fairytales and secret gardens.

Sure, jumping through books into the world’s most beautiful libraries to protect humans from mystical creatures is awesome. No one knows that better than Gia Kearns, but she could do without the part where people are always trying to kill her. Oh, and the fact that Pop and her had to move away from her friends and life as she knew it.

And if that isn’t enough, her boyfriend, Arik, is acting strangely. Like, maybe she should be calling him “ex,” since he’s so into another girl. But she doesn’t have time to be mad or even jealous, because someone has to save the world from the upcoming apocalypse, and it looks like that’s going to be Gia.

Maybe. If she survives.

Review:

Guardian of Secrets is the thrilling sequel to Brenda Drake’s Thief of Lies.

I have to admit that I din’t really know what to expect when I started this book. I was definitely afraid that the few issues I had with the first book will carry-on and that the plot would be predictable. I’m very happy to report that most of the issues did not reappear, or if they did they were minimal and towards the beginning, and that the plot took my by surprise over and over and over again!

Since I love lists (and because I don’t want to give away too much) here’s a list of thoughts about the book:

  • Complex, but easy to understand magic system
  • Detailed world building
  • Learned more about the characters
  • Heart-breaking love triangle
  • Intriguing plot
  • New settings
  • More creatures
  • PLOT TWISTS

My main issue with the first novel was that because of the fast pacing, I didn’t get to know the characters or enjoy the intense scenes much. Brenda Drake remedied that in this book and I am hooked. I absolutely adore all of the characters! I’m not a fan of the love-triangle trope, but it was so well written. I haven’t felt so conflicted about a love triangle since The Infernal Devices!

highly recommend this series to anyone who is looking for a unique read with magical elements. I cannot wait for the next book in this series!

She grew up the youngest of three children, an Air Force brat, and the continual new kid at school. She hosts workshops and contests for writers such as Pitch Wars and Pitch Madness on her blog, and holds Twitter pitch parties on the hashtag, #PitMad. #TackleYourTBR Kick-Off!

TYTBR

It’s day 1 of #TackleYourTBR, a month long challenge that me and the lovely ladies from The Book Bratz are hosting! #TackleYourTBR is a month long challenge that will be taken place in December dedicated to readers and bloggers. The goal is to complete any challenges or goals you may have set up at the beginning of the year before 2015 ends!

First of all, thank you to everyone who have already signed up! I am so excited to see your progress so be sure to leave your links in the comments and use the hashtag so I can follow along on your progress (:

Although #TackleYourTBR is dedicated to just finishing up any challenges you set at the beginning of the year we are providing you with two more opportunities to challenge yourself!

The first challenge is geared towards bloggers (although bookstagrams and bookish-Twitters are welcome to join in as well), in this challenge we provide a topic that you can talk about as you do your weekly update or if you just need some inspiration to post that week. I don’t know about you, but I usually struggle to find things to talk about in my weekly wrap-up posts whenever I participate in challenges, but this challenge can fix that!

Topic of the week:

  • Week 1: TBR & Goals
  • Week 2: Top 15 of 2015 (events, books, etc)
  • Week 3: Favorite moments of 2015
  • Week 4: Holiday Wishlist
  • Week 5: New Year’s Resolutions

The second challenge was created for participants who have bookstagrams and bookish-Twitters (once again, everyone is welcomed to join). In this challenge you have to find a way to incorporate that week’s theme into your reading, picture or caption. For example, Week 4’s theme is Ugly Holiday Sweater so you can take a picture of your book with an ugly holiday sweater OR you can find a book  that reminds you of a holiday sweater (ugly on the outside but warm and cozy on the inside).

For the ambitious, an additional challenge:

  • Week 1: Snow
  • Week 2: Naughty and Nice List
  • Week 3: Fruit Cake (something that requires an acquired taste)
  • Week 4: Ugly Holiday Sweater (ugly on the outside, warm and cozy on the inside)
  • Week 5: Nostalgia

Feel free to post any time during the week, but check in on my and The Book Bratz’s blogs on Sundays where we will be posting our own weekly wrap-ups!

Review: E-ARC of Sisters of Wind and Flame

Yay, another review! As you all probably know by now, I’ve been reading Awakening Foster Kelly for the past three weeks now but haven’t had a chance to finish it due to all the craziness in my personal life.

A couple of days ago I was going through my feed on twitter and saw that Jennifer Ellision was looking for bloggers to read and review her prequel short “Sisters of Wind and Flame”

Of course I couldn’t resist this opportunity! I decided to take a break from my current read and asked Jennifer if I could read/review it and I’m so happy I decided to!

sisters of wind and flame

Sisters of Wind and Flame  is a short prequel to Threats of Sky and Sea. Here’s the blurb from Goodreads:

Once, Lady Katerine was simply Ekaterina. Once, she was not a countess, but a girl who cleaned fireplaces. And once, she had a sister…

Short and sweet, but very mysterious. Now you understand why I just HAD to read it! Basically it’s about a girl who lives in a world where at the age of 17 people can get powers. These people are called Elementals and the powers can vary from air, fire, and more!

I really loved this story and rated it five out of five stars! The story was fast paced and really interesting. The world the Jennifer created was exquisite, I was particularly fond of how she described the Elementals. Their abilities were realistic; for example, if you had the element of air then you will be able to heal someone who has fluid in their lungs.

Ekaterina aka Katerine was a complicated character, but I loved her nonetheless. She was so real! In the beginning of the story she was debating whether or not to buy bread and eat it all or to bring it home to share with her ill mama and sister. Her decision really made her ‘real’ to me because it shows that she has flaws just like everyone else. Her character develops in an unexpected way, but it was really intriguing being inside her head!

All in all, I really enjoyed this short and CANNOT wait to get my hands on Threats of Sky and Sea. Unfortunately I may not be able to get it until my birthday in August *cries* but when I do, you can expect a review for that as well!

Until next post!
