Excerpt Reveal Tour: True North

Abandoned by her family in Plague-ridden Dominion City, eighteen-year-old Lucy Fox has no choice but to rely upon the kindness of the True Borns, a renegade group of genetically enhanced humans, to save her twin sister, Margot. But Nolan Storm, their mysterious leader, has his own agenda. When Storm backtracks on his promise to rescue Margot, Lucy takes her fate into her own hands and sets off for Russia with her True Born bodyguard and maybe-something-more, the lethal yet beautiful Jared Price. In Russia, there’s been whispered rumors of Plague Cure.

While Lucy fights her magnetic attraction to Jared, anxious that his loyalty to Storm will hurt her chances of finding her sister, they quickly discover that not all is as it appears…and discovering the secrets contained in the Fox sisters’ blood before they wind up dead is just the beginning.??

As they say in Dominion, sometimes it’s not you…it’s your DNA.

I’m very excited to share an excerpt to L.E. Sterling’s upcoming novel, True North, out April 4th:

“Let me finish. I have a job to do. I’m obliged to do the best job I can. Not just because I work for Storm but because that’s who I am. That job is to protect you, Lu.”

I turn my head, unable to bear even another second. I’ve had my fill of Jared’s merc routine. Gentle fingers coax me back again until I’m just inches from Jared’s glittering eyes. They look feral in the moonlight.

“But Lu.” He breathes my name like it’s a full sentence. “It’s a good thing that’s my job, because… Don’t you know I can’t even help myself?” He’s so close it’s as though the boundaries of our flesh have disappeared. And within one breath and the next, his lips are on mine. Soft, warm, molding me to his mouth. Then, hungrier, he pulls me closer, seeking more.

I’m dizzy with the taste of him on my lips, in my mouth. When my strength gives out, I slump onto his chest and he holds me tighter. I can barely react to the blazing warmth of his body full down the length of me, the scratchy feeling of his shirt decal under my fingers. There’s a fire in me, too, and with his sudden nip to my lip, it ignites. I’m feverish for him. Jared’s chest is molten rock under my hands. I’m struck with a desire to run kisses up his neck, to just behind his earlobe, just to hear the quick suck of his breath. I grab his hair and pull him tighter still. My lips sting from trying to get closer, closer, and rubbing too hard up against his teeth. Jared tries to hold them back but I can feel his incisors sharpen, his growl deepen, his eyes flip to a luminescent green in the darkness of the garden as he drinks me in.

And just as suddenly as it started, he takes me by the shoulders and pulls me away. I sway on the patio bench like a rag doll, cold and dazed. The garden hums with some secret life, bugs and frogs, but it’s just Jared and me here.

Touching a finger to my swollen lips, I watch him. He pants as though he’s kicked the living tar out of someone, a glassy expression to his feline eyes. He doesn’t take his hands off me, but he isn’t going to bring me close again, either. And that’s what makes me explode.

“What kind of game are you playing with me, anyhow?” I scream at him, thankful that the garden is empty for my tirade.

What do you think? Add it on Goodreads or order it on Amazon today!

L.E. Sterling had an early obsession with sci-fi, fantasy and romance to which she remained faithful even through an M.A. in Creative Writing and a PhD in English Literature – where she completed a thesis on magical representation. She is the author of two previous novels, the cult hit Y/A novel The Originals (under pen name L.E. Vollick), dubbed “the Catcher in the Rye of a new generation” by one reviewer, and the urban fantasy Pluto’s Gate.

Originally hailing from Parry Sound, Ontario, L.E. spent most of her summers roaming across Canada in a van with her father, a hippie musician, her brothers and an occasional stray mutt – inspiring her writing career. She currently lives in Toronto, Ontario.

Guardian of Secrets Blog Tour Review

I am really excited to take part of the Guardian of Secrets blog tour, hosted by Chapter by Chapter Blog Tours! Thank you to the hosts and thank you Entangled Teen for making me aware of this tour and for sending me a finished copy of this book.

Goodreads¦ My Review (3 stars)

Gia Kearns would rather fight with boys than kiss them. That is, until Arik, a leather clad hottie in the Boston Athenaeum, suddenly disappears. While examining the book of world libraries he abandoned, Gia unwittingly speaks the key that sucks her and her friends into a photograph and transports them into a Paris library, where Arik and his Sentinels—magical knights charged with protecting humans from the creatures traveling across the gateway books—rescue them from a demonic hound.

Jumping into some of the world’s most beautiful libraries would be a dream come true for Gia, if she weren’t busy resisting her heart or dodging an exiled wizard seeking revenge on both the Mystik and human worlds. Add a French flirt obsessed with Arik and a fling with a young wizard, and Gia must choose between her heart and her head, between Arik’s world and her own, before both are destroyed.

Guardian of Secrets (Library Jumpers #2)

by Brenda Drake

Publication Date: February 7, 2017

Publisher:  Entangled Teen

Being a Sentinel isn’t all fairytales and secret gardens.

Sure, jumping through books into the world’s most beautiful libraries to protect humans from mystical creatures is awesome. No one knows that better than Gia Kearns, but she could do without the part where people are always trying to kill her. Oh, and the fact that Pop and her had to move away from her friends and life as she knew it.

And if that isn’t enough, her boyfriend, Arik, is acting strangely. Like, maybe she should be calling him “ex,” since he’s so into another girl. But she doesn’t have time to be mad or even jealous, because someone has to save the world from the upcoming apocalypse, and it looks like that’s going to be Gia.

Maybe. If she survives.

Review:

Guardian of Secrets is the thrilling sequel to Brenda Drake’s Thief of Lies.

I have to admit that I din’t really know what to expect when I started this book. I was definitely afraid that the few issues I had with the first book will carry-on and that the plot would be predictable. I’m very happy to report that most of the issues did not reappear, or if they did they were minimal and towards the beginning, and that the plot took my by surprise over and over and over again!

Since I love lists (and because I don’t want to give away too much) here’s a list of thoughts about the book:

  • Complex, but easy to understand magic system
  • Detailed world building
  • Learned more about the characters
  • Heart-breaking love triangle
  • Intriguing plot
  • New settings
  • More creatures
  • PLOT TWISTS

My main issue with the first novel was that because of the fast pacing, I didn’t get to know the characters or enjoy the intense scenes much. Brenda Drake remedied that in this book and I am hooked. I absolutely adore all of the characters! I’m not a fan of the love-triangle trope, but it was so well written. I haven’t felt so conflicted about a love triangle since The Infernal Devices!

highly recommend this series to anyone who is looking for a unique read with magical elements. I cannot wait for the next book in this series!

Firestorm Blog Tour: Guest Post + GIVEAWAY!

firestormFirestorm by Katie Robison

Book 3 of The Windstorm Series

Release Date: June 7th 2016

Amazon ¦ Goodreads

“Why did I possibly think I could do anything to end this war? I was a fool, and now I have one week to get the twins out of here, or I may never see them again.”

The seven tribal nations are at war, and as a taporo, Kit can finally do something to save her people. But Kit can’t shake the feeling she’s playing a game she doesn’t understand and if she agrees to fight, she’ll lose the ones she loves the most.

Firestorm is the highly anticipated conclusion to the The Windstorm Series, a fast-paced fantasy trilogy that critics are calling a “thrilling head-rush of an adventure” (Kirkus Reviews).

Hello everyone and welcome to today’s stop of the Firestorm Blog Tour! I am so honored to be a part of this tour and would like to thank the author- Katie Robison for including me. For this stop Katie will be guest posting and sharing her advice on how to balance school/work with writing. If you didn’t know, Katie wrote this series while she was in grad school- which is so amazing to me, so she definitely has some great advice. Alright I’m going to let Katie introduce herself and share her tips! Be sure to stick until the end for an AMAZING giveaway that Katie is sponsoring.

Katie Robison has a Ph.D. in medieval literature from the University of Minnesota andkatie robison is a registered member of the Ngai Tahu Maori tribe in New Zealand. She currently lives on a lake outside Salt Lake City with her husband, daughter, and Siberian Husky. Learn more at katierobison.com

If you’re a first-time writer, odds are you won’t be getting paid to write your book. (Maybe if you’re writing non-fiction, but probably not if you’re writing fiction. The payoff comes after the book is done.) This means that unless you’re being supported by your parents or your partner or a surprise inheritance you’ll have to eek out whatever time you can to write while also working a day job, or maybe even going to school. This makes writing your first book difficult. But it’s not impossible! Take it from me: I wrote three novels while earning a Ph.D. (During this time, I also had a baby and moved internationally—twice!) If I can do it, you can too! Here’s what worked for me:

  1.  Make writing a priority.

Even when we’re busy, we make time for the things that matter to us, and sometimes for the things that don’t. So make writing matter! Instead of watching a movie or checking Facebook, sit down and pound out a few words. I love to read, but I had to give up a lot of reading time in order to get my books done. Obviously, you need to be a reader in order to be a good writer, but if you’re spending a great deal of time reading—schoolwork is an exception—perhaps some of that time could be applied toward writing. This doesn’t mean you can’t still do fun things. Just do your writing first. 🙂 (This is how I wrote an undergraduate thesis in college. I had to sacrifice a lot of weekend time, but I managed to get it done while still taking a full load of classes, working several part-time jobs, and being involved in some demanding extracurriculars.)

  1.  Write in blocks.

Full disclosure: when I’m working on a project, I’m not very balanced in other areas of my life, which means my house is a mess and we eat a lot of frozen pizza. But I work best when I can give something my full attention. That’s why I find it helps to organize my time into blocks. During a writing block (not to be confused with writer’s block!), I focus almost exclusively on my book; once I reach a specified milestone, I take a break. This worked well for me in grad school. Rather than try to do creative and academic writing at the same time, I alternated between the two. During the school year, I focused on my classes and research; during the summer, I worked on my novels. After my coursework was done and I started my doctoral dissertation, I continued to block my time: I’d work on a chapter of my dissertation, and once it was drafted, I would work on a section of my book. This was helpful, because when I changed blocks, it forced me to let my work sit. Then when I came back to a draft, I could look at it with fresh eyes.

This technique is useful even if you’re not writing a dissertation. Divide the writing process into segments and take a break between each piece. So after your draft is written, set it aside and do something else. Clean the house. Tackle your to do list. Watch the TV show or read the book series you’ve been missing out on. After a few weeks, go back and revise. Then let it sit again. Then go back for more editing. The idea is that when you’re writing in your “block,” it should be your number one priority, which means non-essentials will have to be put on hold. Then, during your break period, you can catch up on all the stuff that you let slide. (It helps to take a break between books too!)

  1. Make time work for you.

I like to write first thing in the morning. It makes it more likely that I’ll get it done (and it’s easier with a toddler in the house). Plus, if I hit my word count and the day is young, I can keep going. But no matter how you do it, make sure you write something every day. It doesn’t have to be a lot. Even if you only write 500 words (you can do that in an hour easily), at the end of four months, you’ll have 60,000 words. Make time work for you, not against you.

When all is said and done, you have to do what works for YOU. You may not like how I do things, so find something that matches your rhythm and that fits into your life. And remember: writing is hard work, but it’s also supposed to be fun! When I’m working on a book, it’s what makes me want to get out of bed in the morning. If you’re not enjoying the process, take a step back and figure out why. Maybe give yourself a break to brainstorm and daydream. Then come back when you feel more energized. If writing matters to you and you carve out the time, you can make it happen. Good luck!

Seriously some amazing advice! I know that I will be waking up earlier this upcoming semester to work on my writing. Thanks so much Katie!

Okay so now for the giveaway, Katie has put together an amazing giveaway for this stop! It includes: signed copies of the trilogy, a necklace, a bookmark, and a journal. Honestly, I am beyond jealous of whoever wins, this prize looks amazing! Discussion + Review: The Elementals Series

If you’ve been following my blog, or even my social media, for a few months than you know just how much I love Michelle Madow’s books! My love for them is so strong that I decided to write an entire post all about her latest series: Elementals! If you’re a fan of the Percy Jackson or Secret Circle series then you’re in for a treat. This series is the perfect blend of the two plus so much more! Read on if you want to know more about this fascinating series!

Nicole Cassidy is a witch descended from the Greek gods… but she doesn’t know it until she moves to a new town and discovers a dangerous world of magic and monsters that she never knew existed.

When the Olympian Comet shoots through the sky for the first time in three thousand years, Nicole and four others — including mysterious bad-boy Blake — are gifted with elemental powers. But the comet has another effect — it opens the portal to another dimension that has imprisoned the Titans for centuries. After an ancient monster escapes, it’s up to Nicole and the others to follow a cryptic prophecy in time to save the town… and possibly the world.

Blood of hydraElementals: The Blood of Hydra

Book 2

A demigod who can kill with a touch. It’s an ability that must be kept secret from everyone—even from those trusted most.

Finding out that she was a witch was strange enough, but now Nicole must face the realization that she has the rare power to kill with just a touch. No one can know her secret — not even Blake, who she’s had undeniable chemistry with since first moving to town.

Now Nicole, Blake, and the three others with elemental powers must journey abroad to stop a series of monsters that they previously believed to be dead from rising once again and destroying the mortal world. Will they all survive the quest? And how long will it be until Nicole is forced to use her ability to kill in front of everyone, revealing the true darkness of her powers?

Mini Review:

I actually was lucky enough to receive an extremely early copy of this novel because Michelle was awesome enough to let me refer to it for a presentation and paper for my Mythology class! I’ve been holding off on my review so my teacher won’t accuse me of plagiarism :/

Things heat up very quickly in The Blood of the Hydra! If you thought The Prophecy of Shadows was action packed just wait until you dive into this. The Elementals embark on a journey after they learn more about the portal and the monsters coming out of it. Readers are taken on an epic journey that parallels The Odyssey but with a unique modern twist! Between monsters, gods, and boy troubles, this book will keep you at the edge of your seat wondering what’s going to happen next.

head of medusaElementals: The Head of Medusa

Book 3

Release Date: June 29, 2016

When Nicole Cassidy moved to a new town, she discovered that she was a witch descended from gods. But that was nothing compared to learning that it was up to her and four others with mysterious elemental powers to help save the world from the Titans, who would soon return to Earth.

Now her relationship with Blake — the fire Elemental — is finally heating up. But she must remain focused, because Typhon, one of the deadliest creatures in history, has escaped from the weakening prison world. Only one object can destroy him — the head of Medusa herself.

Follow the Elementals as they journey to the end of the Earth, facing choices that will put their lives and the entire world at risk. Will they all survive the mission? Find out in the riveting third book in the Elementals series, The Head of Medusa.

I am beyond excited to continue this series! First of all- look at this cover, it’s stunning. I cannot wait to see where Michelle is going to take us next, but I know it’s going to be fantastic. Michelle never disappoints (:

Elementals: The Portal to Kerberos

Title Reveal

The title for the 4th installment was released last week and I am soooooo excited! There will be a cover reveal in June but I think that this piece has clouds, so the air elemental may take this cover. But we’ll find out! If I’m not mistaken, Michelle mentioned on Twitter that this book will parallel Dante’s Inferno– which sounds absolutely amazing.

Why should you read Elementals?

Elementals is a really fun series that is packed full of action, adventure, and drama! If you love Greek mythology, witches, and magic than this series is absolutely perfect for you. Pick up your copy today and dive into the magical world of the Elementals!

My BEA & BookCon Tips!

It’s that time of year again! The days are getting longer and the anticipation for BEA and BookCon is almost tangible. This time last year I was a book convention newbie and was scouring the internet for any advice I could find to ensure a great experience. Most of the posts really helped me, so I decided to share some of my own this year. Please note that I am basing my tips on my experience last year in New York, Chicago may be different. Hope this helps!

⇒Wear comfortable clothes

• This is a popular, yet important, tip that I saw a million times during my search last year. Since both events are pretty much all-day occasions you must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time.

• BEA is a more professional event, geared towards people who work in publishing and bookish industries so I would suggest that you wear business casual clothing. I wore comfortable dresses on these days!

• BookCon is more relaxed since it’s open to the public, so I wore jeans and nice shirts.

• Last year, at the Javits Center, I ended up bringing a sweater most of the days for the moments that I wasn’t running around the show floor.  If you have a light sweater I would definitely recommend that you bring it- just in case.

• Bring a bag big enough to carry all of your essentials but small enough to have on you at all times!

⇒Bring snacks and water

• Keep your body happy and fuel it from time to time throughout the day! Running around, meeting people, and seeing your favorite authors takes more energy than you think. Pack your favorite snacks, like nuts or granola bars, and some water in your essentials bag for easy access.

⇒Schedule ahead of time

• If I’m not mistaken the autographing schedule is already up and the panels should be up soon (if not already). Use these resources to set up a schedule for your day(s).

• Your schedule doesn’t have to be fancy (mine was literally a list of names and times), just make sure it’s set up in chronological order and highlight the things you MUST go to.

• Sometimes the unexpected happens- last year someone canceled last minute and one of the signings went by quicker than I thought. In case of a scenario like this you should have a few ‘back-up’ signings/panels that you are interested in included in your schedule.

• For big authors and panels try to get in line about 45 minutes to an hour before the scheduled time so you can ensure that you get a good spot. You can also use this time to snack and re-hydrate (;

• One of the best things you can do for yourself is give yourself some time to just walk around for an hour with no panels or signings scheduled. Give an empty booth or signing line some love, see what books are being given away, and enjoy the fact that you are simply there.

• Make multiple copies of your schedule OR take pictures/save it on your phone so you don’t have to worry about losing it.

⇒Utilize Twitter and BookCon app

• The BookCon app was a great resource to see what others are doing as well as get access to the panel and signing schedules. The only downfall is that is gets a bit flooded during the day and hard to keep up with.

• Twitter was my best friend and will be yours too. If you know a group of Twitter peeps going to BEA/BookCon try and see if they’ll join a group DM where everyone can share info throughout the day. I found out about so many ARC drops and books because of the group I was in!

• Something I wished I did was turn on my Twitter notifications for my favorite authors and publishing companies. They would randomly tweet about code words and ARC drops and I missed so many because I kept forgetting to check my timeline. Don’t make the same mistakes as me!

⇒Choose wisely

• Walking into the convention center will be like being in one of the best dreams ever. (Especially in BEA) there will be books everywhere! One of the hardest, but necessary, things you have to remember is to choose wisely. Trust me, it’s not easy. My family ended up with over 350 books after 5 days (110 of which were mine), so take this advice.

• Be honest with yourself, is this book something you’re interested in? If not put it down, the last thing you need is another book you probably won’t read on your never ending TBR pile.

• In New York there was a luggage area where you could store your suit case for a small cost and dump your books throughout the day. They also offered mailing services to ship your books straight home. Check with the convention center and see if these services are offered in Chicago (:

⇒Talk to people

• These are your people! Don’t be afraid to turn to the person by you in line and strike up a conversation or walk up to a publisher’s booth and talk to one of the people working there. Mostly everyone there is nice and are just as excited as you. Who knows? You might even meet your new blogger/bookish bestie!

And most importantly: HAVE FUN!

Five Books/Series You NEED to Read

I don’t think I’ve ever made a post dedicated to recommending books so I decided to change that! Here is a list of 5 books and or series that needs more love and everyone should read. Please note that these aren’t in any particular order (:

megan duke books

Anything by Megan Duke, but since her Mind Breakers series is currently on hold you should definitely read her Small Circles books! Great for fans of contemporary, these books follow teens’ lives as they experience high school and college. The characters are very developed and the issues they face are extremely realistic. I absolutely adore these books and wish that I had enough money to buy everyone copies! Click here to add her books on Goodreads!

tsds

The Secret Diamond Sisters series!

Michelle Madow creates a story where three sisters discover that their father is the billionaire Las Vegas hotel owner. Their worlds are turned upside down when they move into the hotel, start a new school, and try to adapt to the new lifestyle. This series is often compared to Gossip Girl. I love the drama and  how easy it is to fall into the girls’ world. This will always be something I recommend!

anomaly Anomaly

This one is for all of my sci-fi lovers! I think this book is best read knowing very little about it, but I will tell you that there is fighting, swoon worthy boys, and an interesting take on bending reality! This book was action packed and incredibly funny at times and it breaks my heart that SO FEW people have heard of it. This is another novel that I would love to buy for all of my friends to read because it’s THAT GOOD.

Also- the author is currently working on its sequel so pick this one up soon.

this raging lightThis Raging Light

Another contemporary! This one is a recent discovery for me and I immediately fell in love with this beautiful story. I just recently ‘penned’ an open letter to the author on my blog because the book helped me put my life into perspective. Again, it’s best that you don’t know much going into the book so you can experience everything with the character, but just know that it’s about a girl that is at a lost of what to do with her life when certain situations take place. READ IT.

fragile facade Fragile Facade

This is an edge of your seat type mystery where every turn leaves you even more mystified than before! Lark Kingsley is a rich girl with a secret who suddenly goes missing, Raven Ferragamo is a girl trying to start over. Raven suddenly finds herself in the middle of investigating Lark’s disappearance while trying to get a job. It’s well written and extremely suspenseful!
