Excerpt Reveal Tour: True North

Abandoned by her family in Plague-ridden Dominion City, eighteen-year-old Lucy Fox has no choice but to rely upon the kindness of the True Borns, a renegade group of genetically enhanced humans, to save her twin sister, Margot. But Nolan Storm, their mysterious leader, has his own agenda. When Storm backtracks on his promise to rescue Margot, Lucy takes her fate into her own hands and sets off for Russia with her True Born bodyguard and maybe-something-more, the lethal yet beautiful Jared Price. In Russia, there’s been whispered rumors of Plague Cure.

While Lucy fights her magnetic attraction to Jared, anxious that his loyalty to Storm will hurt her chances of finding her sister, they quickly discover that not all is as it appears…and discovering the secrets contained in the Fox sisters’ blood before they wind up dead is just the beginning.??

As they say in Dominion, sometimes it’s not you…it’s your DNA.

I’m very excited to share an excerpt to L.E. Sterling’s upcoming novel, True North, out April 4th:

“Let me finish. I have a job to do. I’m obliged to do the best job I can. Not just because I work for Storm but because that’s who I am. That job is to protect you, Lu.”

I turn my head, unable to bear even another second. I’ve had my fill of Jared’s merc routine. Gentle fingers coax me back again until I’m just inches from Jared’s glittering eyes. They look feral in the moonlight.

“But Lu.” He breathes my name like it’s a full sentence. “It’s a good thing that’s my job, because… Don’t you know I can’t even help myself?” He’s so close it’s as though the boundaries of our flesh have disappeared. And within one breath and the next, his lips are on mine. Soft, warm, molding me to his mouth. Then, hungrier, he pulls me closer, seeking more.

I’m dizzy with the taste of him on my lips, in my mouth. When my strength gives out, I slump onto his chest and he holds me tighter. I can barely react to the blazing warmth of his body full down the length of me, the scratchy feeling of his shirt decal under my fingers. There’s a fire in me, too, and with his sudden nip to my lip, it ignites. I’m feverish for him. Jared’s chest is molten rock under my hands. I’m struck with a desire to run kisses up his neck, to just behind his earlobe, just to hear the quick suck of his breath. I grab his hair and pull him tighter still. My lips sting from trying to get closer, closer, and rubbing too hard up against his teeth. Jared tries to hold them back but I can feel his incisors sharpen, his growl deepen, his eyes flip to a luminescent green in the darkness of the garden as he drinks me in.

And just as suddenly as it started, he takes me by the shoulders and pulls me away. I sway on the patio bench like a rag doll, cold and dazed. The garden hums with some secret life, bugs and frogs, but it’s just Jared and me here.

Touching a finger to my swollen lips, I watch him. He pants as though he’s kicked the living tar out of someone, a glassy expression to his feline eyes. He doesn’t take his hands off me, but he isn’t going to bring me close again, either. And that’s what makes me explode.

“What kind of game are you playing with me, anyhow?” I scream at him, thankful that the garden is empty for my tirade.

What do you think? Add it on Goodreads or order it on Amazon today!

L.E. Sterling had an early obsession with sci-fi, fantasy and romance to which she remained faithful even through an M.A. in Creative Writing and a PhD in English Literature – where she completed a thesis on magical representation. She is the author of two previous novels, the cult hit Y/A novel The Originals (under pen name L.E. Vollick), dubbed “the Catcher in the Rye of a new generation” by one reviewer, and the urban fantasy Pluto’s Gate.

Originally hailing from Parry Sound, Ontario, L.E. spent most of her summers roaming across Canada in a van with her father, a hippie musician, her brothers and an occasional stray mutt – inspiring her writing career. She currently lives in Toronto, Ontario.

Did I complete my goals?

In my last recap, I listed my goals for the month of February. One of my main goals was to get on a blogging schedule and stick to it, which I kinda (?) did. I made an overly ambitious schedule that required me to post everyday and made a bank of post ideas to work on. This worked for the first 9 days, but I burnt out soon after resulting in an inconsistent schedule.

What I learned: While posting everyday did increase the number of views I received, it isn’t worth the burn-out and inconsistency. Also- I really need to work on a promotional schedule/system that doesn’t take me too long to set up because setting up Hootsuite did not help with my burn-out.

What now? After tweeting a poll, I discovered that most people prefer 2-3 posts a week.

What did I read/review?

Community Posts:

It’s always important to spread the love! Here are a couple posts that I loved:

Jessica @ The Book Bratz convinced me to Help Bring a Bookstore to the Bronx (after my next paycheck!)

Alice @ Arctic Books put together a visually pleasing February Uppercase unboxing and review!

SERIESous Book Reviews created one of my favorite Perfect Match, ‘if you like this, then try this’, posts.

A Small Wardrobe wowed me with her minimalist One Week of OOTDs.

Looking Ahead:

Since I have many personal goals in March, I will be keeping my bookish goals to a minimum! I learned a lot in February and plan to apply this knowledge to the future.

  • Read all the books I was sent to review
    • This will be the hardest, but since I’m not currently watching any shows on Netflix I should be able to do it.
  • Post 2-3 times a week
    • I definitely do not want to burn out again!
  • Create an easy promotional plan
    • I want to start utilizing Pinterest on top of Twitter, but often find myself dreading scheduling tweets or taking pictures. My plan is to try out a couple of systems to see which one will ease the dread.
  • Write
    • Anything, please!

How was your February?

Goodreads¦ My Review (3 stars)

Gia Kearns would rather fight with boys than kiss them. That is, until Arik, a leather clad hottie in the Boston Athenaeum, suddenly disappears. While examining the book of world libraries he abandoned, Gia unwittingly speaks the key that sucks her and her friends into a photograph and transports them into a Paris library, where Arik and his Sentinels—magical knights charged with protecting humans from the creatures traveling across the gateway books—rescue them from a demonic hound.

Jumping into some of the world’s most beautiful libraries would be a dream come true for Gia, if she weren’t busy resisting her heart or dodging an exiled wizard seeking revenge on both the Mystik and human worlds. Add a French flirt obsessed with Arik and a fling with a young wizard, and Gia must choose between her heart and her head, between Arik’s world and her own, before both are destroyed.

Guardian of Secrets (Library Jumpers #2)

by Brenda Drake

Publication Date: February 7, 2017

Publisher:  Entangled Teen

Being a Sentinel isn’t all fairytales and secret gardens.

Sure, jumping through books into the world’s most beautiful libraries to protect humans from mystical creatures is awesome. No one knows that better than Gia Kearns, but she could do without the part where people are always trying to kill her. Oh, and the fact that Pop and her had to move away from her friends and life as she knew it.

And if that isn’t enough, her boyfriend, Arik, is acting strangely. Like, maybe she should be calling him “ex,” since he’s so into another girl. But she doesn’t have time to be mad or even jealous, because someone has to save the world from the upcoming apocalypse, and it looks like that’s going to be Gia.

Maybe. If she survives.

Review:

Guardian of Secrets is the thrilling sequel to Brenda Drake’s Thief of Lies.

I have to admit that I din’t really know what to expect when I started this book. I was definitely afraid that the few issues I had with the first book will carry-on and that the plot would be predictable. I’m very happy to report that most of the issues did not reappear, or if they did they were minimal and towards the beginning, and that the plot took my by surprise over and over and over again!

Since I love lists (and because I don’t want to give away too much) here’s a list of thoughts about the book:

  • Complex, but easy to understand magic system
  • Detailed world building
  • Learned more about the characters
  • Heart-breaking love triangle
  • Intriguing plot
  • New settings
  • More creatures
  • PLOT TWISTS

My main issue with the first novel was that because of the fast pacing, I didn’t get to know the characters or enjoy the intense scenes much. Brenda Drake remedied that in this book and I am hooked. I absolutely adore all of the characters! I’m not a fan of the love-triangle trope, but it was so well written. I haven’t felt so conflicted about a love triangle since The Infernal Devices!

highly recommend this series to anyone who is looking for a unique read with magical elements. I cannot wait for the next book in this series!

This Week: Book Boyfriends I’d Spend Valentine’s Day With

I’d like to preface this post by saying that I love each of my book boyfriends equally and would spend this special day with each of them. I also want to share that I never realized how my love for these two characters are so strong that I cannot seem to find any others that can compare to them.

Rhysand

Rhys is a recent book boyfriend that I met almost a year ago. When I first met him (in A Court of Thorns and Roses) I was unsure on how to feel. I decided to take a chance on him, which was the best thing I did. I imagine that our Valentines Day would be spent flying around, dancing, and laughing before stargazing until dawn.

Daemon Black

Oh Daemon, the first character that made me believe in book boyfriends. Daemon Black encompasses everything I hate to love about a person. He’s arrogant, but sweet. He aggravating, but loveable. If I ever find a real-life Daemon Black (which I won’t), I probably wouldn’t know what to do. Our Valentines Day would be spent baking cookies and marathoning The Walking Dead and he would probably get me more books to blog about and maybe even purchase a self-hosting plan! He’s my original book boyfriend and I’ll love him forever ❤

Book Blitz: Starfall

Today we have a special message from author Melissa Landers about her latest release, STARFALL!

Hi, booklovers!

I’m author Melissa Landers, and I’m so excited to launch STARFALL, the second and final book in my Starflight duology! This story picks up shortly after the first book ends, but now Cassia and Kane are the main characters, with Doran, Solara, and the rest of the Banshee crew pitching in to help take down an intergalactic mafia. (You know, just an ordinary day in space.) And while saying goodbye to characters is never easy, I think I gave the crew a proper sendoff with plenty of humor, heart, and action. I hope you love STARFALL as much as I do!

Haven’t read the first book? You’re in luck, because for a limited time, Starflight is on sale for 99 cents in all e-formats. Now you can binge read the entire duology in one sitting!
