I Am Haunted by Zak Bagans with Kelly Crigger
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
First I would like to thank Susan Lloyd over at Victory Belt Publishing for sending me a copy of I Am Haunted! I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
For those of you who don’t know, Zak is a paranormal investigator and TV host of the popular show Ghost Adventures (which airs on the Travel Channel). Although I haven’t watched every single episode, I do consider myself a fan. My neighbor introduced me to the show over a year ago and a few month back I decided to binge watch one season that was available on Netflix. I quickly became slightly obsessed and started following Zak and Aaron on Twitter, which is how I found out about this book. I was elated when Susan responded to my request and ecstatic when it arrived in the mail. It was a fairly quick read, but upon finishing I was uncertain with how I felt about it. I decided to gather my thoughts before writing my review/rating the book.
The main reason why I had trouble rating this book was because I wasn’t 100% sure if I liked it. I was under the impression that it was going to be more like a behind the scenes VIP look at the investigations from the TV show, so I was super confused when the book took a different turn. It felt a bit unorganized and I disliked the random flow of the book. At first it was frustrating, but once I got over my expectations and began to view each chapter as its own story I began to love the book.
There were many unique aspects that I enjoyed, I loved how readers learned more about the Ghost Adventures Crew and got an exclusive look at how their lives were when the cameras weren’t on them. I obsessed over the chapters that discussed some of their investigations in further detail, but my favorite chapters were the ones that included Zak’s theories and beliefs. It was extremely interesting to look inside of Zak’s mind and see the world the way he does. I always wondered what paranormal investigators believed in when it comes to religion and Zak did a great job stating his beliefs in a non controversial way.
So why did I knock off one star? Well, it’s kind of hard to say but since there’s a one in a million chance Zak will read this I’ll just spit it out. I really, really disliked Zak’s attitude for the majority of the book. I felt that he was trying way to hard to make himself sound awesome. On more than one occasion he was almost bragging about how he yells at people and that he doesn’t care what others think- he will beat up anyone. He also contradicted himself many times, saying that he doesn’t like haters but yet he hated on other ghost hunters and many celebrities. Usually I don’t care about stuff like that but it was really overwhelming and I couldn’t ignore my annoyance.
Overall, despite my annoyance, I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who enjoys the show Ghost Adventures! You can purchase a copy on Amazon by clicking the link above (:
